Avocados are, by far, my favorite food; in fact, I try to eat at least one avocado every day. The green, creamy fruit can pretty much go with anything. I add half an avocado to my morning smoothie and another half to my salad at dinnertime…and if I have a craving for nachos, I love making homemade guacamole!
Like most people, I used to toss the avocado seed in the garbage.But it turns out avocado seeds are not only healthy, but they have even been used in traditional medicine for centuries.
Is It Safe To Eat Avocado Seeds?
While some fruit seeds contain the toxic chemical cyanide (like cherry seeds, plum seeds and apricot seed) that can cause nausea, dizziness and in some cases death, avocado seeds don’t have that effect. They contain mildly toxic tannins and only if you eat several seeds you’d notice side effects. In 2013 several researchers published their study in the Scientific World Journal in which they stated that avocado seed extract is not toxic and it is safe for consumption.
Health Benefits of Avocado Seeds
Avocado fruits are abundant in folate, Vitamin B and healthy fats. Moreover, their seeds are also loaded with healthy nutrients as well. Namely, they contain almost 70% of the avocados antioxidants, as well as fatty acids, triterpenes, phytosterols, and glucosides from abscisic acid.
Moreover, the seeds are a rich source of bioactive phytochemical, including proanthocyanids and Flavonoids. Moreover, these beneficial seeds are also considered to be one of the best sources of soluble fiber.

A study from the journal Plant Foods for Human Nutrition in 2012, showed that avocado seed flour decreased the cholesterol and LDL (low-density lipoprotein) cholesterol levels in mice. It was also pointed out that avocado seeds prevent arterial plaque formation.
The fiber in avocado seeds is connected with decreased cholesterol. The fiber will attach itself on the cholesterol in the intestines and stop the absorption. Some other researches have shown that these seeds help with high cholesterol and hypertension. It also prevents inflammation and diabetes.

These seeds are rich in antioxidants, and the flavonols antioxidant compound provides strong anti-tumor properties. Moreover, a recent study published in the peer-reviewed journal Cancer Research, found that a compound found in avocado seed extract called avocation B was effective against acute myeloid leukemia cells.
In the study, researchers tested almost 800 natural health products against the human acute myeloid leukemia cells.
Another research published in the journal Pharmaceutical Biology, researchers from the University of Antioquia in Medellin, Colombia, showed that the extract from avocado fruit and seeds caused leukemia cells to self destruct.

It is proven that the toil from the avocado seed increases the collagen in the skin thus reducing the wrinkles. This oil is also used as a treatment for acne flare-ups.

- Grow an avocado plant – You can now have a decorative houseplant in your home. All you need to do is to plant the avocado seed in your garden.
How to Extract Avocado Seed
- Remove the seed cleanly by slicing around the pit.
- Put the knife tip into the pit, twist and pull easily.
- In the end, remove the seed from the knife.
- Put the seed in a plastic bag and crush it with some blunt object
- Put the crushed seed in your smoothie together with your other favorite ingredients. If your blender is powerful enough, don’t crush the seeds, just add water.
RECIPE FOR THE PERFECT AVOCADO SEED GREEN GOODNESS SMOOTHIE
- 1/2 avocado seed
- 1/2 avocado
- 1 cup of almond milk or water
- 1 ripe pear
- 1/2 apple
- 1 cup of organic spinach
- 1 small piece of ginger (grated)
