Women Need More Sleep Than Men Because Their Brains Work Harder, According To Science

233

According to science, women have more complex brains and this suggests that they need more sleep. Prof. Jim Horne who is the director of the Sleep Research Center at Loughborough University said that for women poor sleep is linked to high levels of psychological stress and greater hostility, anger, and depression feelings. These feeling are not, however, connected with the same degree of sleep disruption in men.

There is a specific explanation offered on the importance of sleeping. He claims that the major function of sleep is allowing the brain to recovery and repair itself. While we sleep, the cortex which is the part of the brain responsible for thought memory, language, etc. disengages from the scenes, going into recovery mode. The more you use it throughout the day, the more it needs to recover. Thus, you need more sleep.

Women are multi-tasking agents and tend to do lots at once, being flexible, too. For this reason they use more of their actual brain in comparison to men. Due to this, they have a bigger need for sleep. Moreover, those men who have complex jobs which involve a lot of decision-making and later thinking need more sleep than the average men, however, this is not much as in women. This is all because the brains of women are differently wired from men’s and are more complex, thus their sleep has to be slightly greater, 20 minutes more on the average. Some of the women may need slightly more or less than this.

Women need more than 8 hours

Yes, we know that it is highly recommended that you sleep at least 8 hours, and 7 hours usually suffice, but Professor Horne explains that women’s brain “wired differently from men’s and are more complex, so their sleep need will be slightly greater.”

What makes woman’s brain more complex?

Unlike men, women are used to do multi-tasking, and expose their brains to more strenuous activities. This means that women’s brain needs more time to recover completely, and sleeping is the best way to achieve that.

What happens to Tired Men?

Professor Horne explained that man who do jobs that involve decision-making need more sleep than an average man, but still less than an average woman.

How to improve your sleep quality

There are many ways to get a good night’s sleep. But, these tips may not work for each of you, because we are all different.

  • Avoid consuming foods that are stimulating

Caffeine in coffee, theobromine in cacao or chocolate, and sugar are foods which act like stimulants and affect your sleep, often causing insomnia.

  • Yoga

Yoga postures prepare the body for a good rest, which is why practicing yoga is often recommended to insomniacs. Try these 6 Relaxing Yoga Poses to Help You Sleep.

  • Meditation

A lot of women have a hard time to fall asleep as their brains work non-stop. Meditation can help since it assists the brain to settle and get into a state of deep relaxation.

  • Melatonin

Experts agree that melatonin helps you sleep better. Doses of 1-3 mg of melatonin work best, preferably an hour before bedtime.

  • Routine sleep

You should set a sleep routine so that the brain recognizes the need to slow down and relax. You will sleep much better at night in this way.
